DAILY NIGERIAN FOREIGN EXCHANGE MARKET (NFEM) RATES (₦/US$)

Previous Average = 1,330.8803

Forex Analysis
Our Naira to Dollar moving average fell by a marginal 0.09%. CBN continued to utilize Nigeria’s Foreign Reserves to supply regular liquidity interventions, which kept volatility, strictly locked in place, despite the NFEM turnover spiking to $1.016 billion (with interbank trades alone taking up $490.85 million). This massive concentration of dollar demand from non-bank corporates, importers, and manufacturers clearing short-term commercial obligations was the primary reason the Naira temporarily touched its weekly closing low of ₦1,333.
By October 15, interbank FX turnover contracted by 58.9% down to $201.56 million, with the number of executed deals dropping from 179 down to 128. With the massive demand pressure cleared out, the Naira was able to claw back its minor losses. Informal street channels showed minimal volatility as speculative trading remained largely subdued, leading to the spread between official and parallel rates to fall to a ₦40 to ₦60 range.

Crude Oil Analysis
Our Brent crude moving average rose by about 4.4% this week. Geopolitical risk continues to take center stage. They hit maximum velocity mid-week as near the Strait of Hormuz after a Singapore-flagged container ship was targeted and sunk. This sent Persian Gulf tanker freight rates to record highs, adding massive delivery costs to seaborne crude and forcing traders to aggressively price in a high probability of structural blockades.
This situation was further exacerbated on Thursday, October 15, when the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) released its weekly petroleum status report, shocking the market with an 8.6 million-barrel crude inventory drop for the week ending October 9. This was the largest single-week inventory decline since February.

Stock Market Index Activity for the week closing 16th Oct 2026

Stock Market Index Analysis
Fifty (50) equities appreciated in price during the week, higher than twenty-four (24) equities in the previous week. Thirty (30) equities depreciated in price, lower than fifty-four (54) equities in the previous week, while sixty-six (66) equities remained unchanged, lower than sixty-eight (68) recorded in the previous week.
The All-Share Index (ASI), however declined for the third consecutive week. Again however, beneath the surface of this index drop, the market experienced a profound structural divergence characterized by a powerful retail stock rally clashing with heavy institutional liquidations at the top of the market.
Low-priced equities dominated the top of the gainers’ chart. Retail and institutional interest swirled around agricultural processing and tech logistics, positioning these cheaper counters for aggressive double-digit price expansions.
Market liquidity received a monumental structural boost during the week. Aradel Holdings Plc officially listed on the main board of the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), immediately entering the top gainers’ list. The energy giant’s listing attracted significant institutional capital re-routing, driving up overall market turnover and capturing massive investor focus away from traditional sectors.
Conversely, the top losers’ list reveals targeted sell-offs in heavyweight, highly liquid tickers. Fund managers aggressively liquidated positions in large-cap banking and consumer goods stocks to free up cash, shifting their capital into newly listed energy opportunities like Aradel or chasing higher yields in short-term fixed-income windows
Below is a sector by sector breakdown of performance for the week October 9 to October 16

Fixed-Income Analysis
Market activity across Nigerian sovereign debt instruments this week was dominated by a high-stakes showdown at the primary Nigerian Treasury Bill (NTB) auction and a massive wave of incoming liquidity from maturing securities.
The NTB auction took place on October 14th, 2026. The pertinent details are reported in the table below:

In Federal Government (FGN) Bonds, there was no auction conducted by the Debt Management Office (DMO), thus the sovereign bond space operated entirely via secondary trading and portfolio rebalancing. Trading volume for FGN Bonds settled at ₦1.94 trillion. This represented a mild contraction from the ₦2.18 trillion peak recorded during the week ending October 9, as dealers temporarily took a breather ahead of the massive ₦1.75 trillion primary market auction slated for Monday, October 19.
Secondary market yields across the FGN bond maturity curve remained varied, hovering generally between 14.80% and 17.75% depending on the specific duration of the bond bucket.
Following the massive ₦3.31 trillion primary auction mop-up earlier in October, the OMO segment spent the week of October 12 dealing with heavy structural cash flows. The money market absorbed roughly ₦2.50 trillion in total system inflows. A significant portion of this liquidity came from maturing OMO bills flowing right back into commercial bank vaults.
OMO bills generated a robust secondary turnover of ₦1.45 trillion, while average secondary market yields for OMO bills closed out the week at 18.51%.

Bitcoin Analysis
Our bitcoin moving average fell by about 2% this week. After starting the week steadily, Bitcoin faced severe macroeconomic headwinds that forced a mid-week flash correction before it ultimately stabilized at crucial technical support levels.
The core trigger was the unexpected spike in U.S. inflation to 3.7%. This triggered risk-off rotation out of crypto, as crypto futures liquidations hit $927.3 million and approximately $681 million was pulled out by institutional Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). Prices firmed up back above $82,300 by Friday.
