There is an African proverb that says, “When brothers fight over an inheritance, strangers learn the family’s secrets.”
The conversations around the P-Square saga have been deeply saddening.
Here was a family that built one of Africa’s most successful music brands. Talent, hard work and years of sacrifice turned a dream into a global phenomenon.
Yet today, the headlines are no longer about the music.
They are about ownership.
Control.
Money.
Authority.
Relationships.
Like many Nigerians, I sincerely hope the family finds healing and resolution. Because no amount of wealth is worth losing the people with whom you built it.
But beyond the headlines lies a lesson that every family, entrepreneur, business partner and investor should pay attention to.
As someone in the trusteeship profession, I have learnt that many disputes do not begin because people are dishonest. They begin because the rules were never clearly documented.
Who owns what?
Who has authority to make decisions?
How is income shared?
What happens if one person exits the business?
Who protects the interests of everyone involved?
These are governance questions, not questions that should be answered in the middle of a disagreement.
This is where a Trust becomes invaluable.
Imagine if the P-Square brand, music catalogue, royalties, trademarks and other key assets had been placed in a professionally managed Trust from the outset.
The Trust Deed would have clearly defined ownership, administration, decision-making, succession and dispute resolution.
The Trustee would not replace the family.
The Trustee would protect the structure the family agreed upon.
A Trust cannot stop disagreements.
But it can stop disagreements from becoming battles over ownership and control.
This lesson extends far beyond celebrities.
It applies to siblings running a family business.
To friends building a startup.
To spouses acquiring properties.
To parents who hope their children will remain united after they are gone.
Relationships are built on love.
Legacies are sustained by structure.
And one of the strongest structures ever created for preserving wealth, protecting relationships and ensuring continuity is a Trust.
Perhaps the best time to create one is not when conflict has begun…
…but while everyone is still smiling.
