Yesterday I threw up a picture of subject and international music star- wizkid at subjects 60th and captioned it – is Tony trying too hard?
I got one of the most massive feedback since I started writing to over 10,000 people on whats app.
The feedback fell like heavy rain with varying responses divided into two distinct areas – yes, he is trying to too hard, and no, he is just perfect.
A few said, ‘ Edgar, he is like you refusing to grow old.
But the most succinct response would be my friend, who is a veteran image and PR consultant. Let me paraphrase him
……..Well, he dresses the part, and the perception he is trying to build seems to be working.
But he his definitely paying some good money for all these A-list Afrobeats pop musicians that attend his parties and for our boy Wizzy’s brand Ambassadorship and sponsorship by his bank and cash cow, UBA.
The only snag for me with his soft life spin despite all the dough this guy has made (legitimately, at least), is his heavy igbotic accent with his long pointed shoes.
He doesn’t seem to have that kind of street credibility and joi de vivoire, like a down to earth guy next door that he tries so hard to project and spin, even though that is his background, before hitting it big time!
Meaning: all these hipness and swag, he is always trying hard to be seen as, does not come naturally to him…. from his body language, which in unspoken communications speaks even before you open your mouth or dress….
Let him consult me to do some real image management for him……
This to me, perfectly encapsulates the Tony we are forced to see daily.
Unlike his contemporaries who are delving into deeper realms, ensuring immortality and mystery, Tony seems to be delving towards flitting and ephemeral areas of lifestyle leveraging on fashion, entertainment, travels and maybe philanthropy as entre
Now, this projects a fun guy in the mold of Richard Branson, but the lack of the eccentricity of that one quickly pulls him away from that positioning.
Recently, in searching for Facukty for my Masterclass for CEOs, he didn’t even get a mention despite all he has contributed to entrepreneurship, finance, and leadership
Instead, people like Ovia, Fola, Atedo, and even Emir Sanusi got massive votes.
A class of young CEOs and Tony not making the list of faculty?
I love his looks, I love his pieces, his love for family and the success he has made of his life and I think the next positioning is to merge all of this onto a unique type of thought leadership model that will be very attractive to a new set of emerging smbusiness people whike stil allowing him explore his inner child.
My last piece on Tony Elumelu bf pple starts to wonder if he steals my wife.

If he succeeds, that would be him carving a new space for himself encapsulating where he wants to be, where he is now and what legacy he would be leaving behind.
What I see now is confusion.
